According to WLTX news, the fire broke out during a Sunday service and engulfed the St Mary Church at 701 University Avenue.

It's now being treated as a "pre-incident investigation," WLTX reports. The Charleston Fire Department said Monday they are working to identify the cause of the fire, but they do not yet believe the fire was intentionally set.

The cause of the fire was being investigated, WLTX notes.

Officials do not yet know how many worshipers were inside, the website states. The church's interior was still being extensively scrubbed Monday afternoon.

It wasn't immediately clear how many lives were lost in the fire, but fire officials did confirm that one person died and one person died at the scene after being taken to a local hospital. The fire was extinguished within an hour of the fire being reported.

According to the Baptist Record, St Mary's Episcopal Church is a large, multi-faith institution.

Inspector farewells force after 25 years of service

By Mark Scott

DUBLIN/MONTGOMERY, Alabama - The City of Montgomery announced that Officer Michael J. Micallef will retire from the force, effective immediately.

In a statement, the department said Micallef, 50, joined the department in 2005 and served nearly two decades at the patrol station after completing the rank of first lieutenant and was promoted to sergeant with two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He retired from the force in 2013.

"This has been a special chapter for Officer Micallef. His service to his community and to the police department has been a defining part of every interaction since we have known him," Police Chief Larry Boyd said in the statement. "His dedication and dedication to the police family, his family's and the public's health, safety and well-being were extraordinary."

Micallef, who was born in Ireland but raised in the U.S., is the third police officer to leave the department this year. Officer Robert Moore retired last year.

The release of Micallef's retirement came two days after the department's attorney general's office announced that the city would pay nearly $7.5 million in court settlements to an investigation into whether the department illegally seized and searched property of citizens in search of marijuana and other illicit drugs.

The department has argued, without evidence, that the practice of seizing and searching in a suspected drug offense is not a seizure and search under the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

"It appears that Officer Micallef and his colleagues were acting in accordance with the best interests of officers," Boyd said in the statement. "Although this was an unfortunate event that has impacted the officers in our community, it will serve as the wakeup call to all Montgomery officers as to the dangers of excessive force."

The announcement came less than a week before two elected members of the City Council were scheduled to speak at a press conference, scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, at the Montgomery City Council Chambers. The Council President, Darryl Roody, said he will call on the mayor to take action against Micallef over the arrests.

At the press conference, Council members Roody, Mike McKeown and Michael Smith said they have concerns about the arrests.

"For the most part, when I see that you've got a large number of people out on the streets looking for drugs... it takes some time for you to process that," Smith said. "I just hope the city can put some of that in some of these decisions and figure out a solution for the officers, or we can make some decisions based on a thorough review.
